Grey Porcelain Outdoor Tiles – Everything You Need to Know

How Do You Lay Porcelain Pavers?

The method you use to install porcelain pavers depends on the type of base you're working with:

  • Laying on a hardcore sub-base:
Use a 5:1 sharp sand and cement mortar mix. It’s essential to apply a slurry primer to the back of each porcelain slab as you lay it to ensure proper adhesion.

  • Laying on a solid concrete base:
You can install the tiles using exterior-grade tile adhesive and a notched trowel to achieve a secure bond.

How Thick Should a Slurry Primer Be?

At Discount Porcelain Superstore, we highly recommend using a slurry primer when installing any outdoor porcelain paving.

But what’s the right consistency?

Think pancake batter – smooth, spreadable, and not too watery. If it’s too runny, it becomes messy and ineffective. If it’s too thick, it won't spread properly across the tile’s surface.

What Are the Best Grey Porcelain Tiles for My Garden?

Grey porcelain paving is one of the most popular choices for UK gardens — and for good reason. It’s:

  • Stylish and versatile

  • Slip-resistant in both wet and dry conditions (R11 rated)

  • Extremely hard-wearing and low maintenance

When choosing the right shade of grey:

  • For sunny, south-facing gardens, consider a darker grey to reduce glare.

  • For shaded or north-facing gardens, a light grey, silver, or even white tile can help brighten the space.

Are Porcelain Paving Tiles Slippery?

No — in fact, porcelain is one of the safest choices for outdoor use.
All of our outdoor porcelain tiles feature a built-in anti-slip surface texture that provides excellent grip, rain or shine. They’re also scratch-resistant and built to withstand heavy foot traffic.

How to Apply a Slurry Primer

Using a slurry primer correctly is essential for a long-lasting porcelain installation. Here's how to do it:

  1. Mix the primer in a clean bucket or tub, using an electric whisk or shovel until it reaches a smooth, pancake batter-like consistency.

  2. Apply the primer to the underside of each porcelain tile using a trowel, brush, or sponge.

  3. Wet-on-wet application is key – always lay the tile while the slurry and mortar bed are still wet. Never let the slurry primer dry out before placing the slab.
